The nobility of Erobia, pt 2


The parliament of Erobia consists of two houses:  House of Lords and the Council of Erobia.  The council of Erobia is the elected lower house, 100 strong, chosen by optional preferential voting (minimum of 3 choices marked to count a ballot) from districts corresponding to the districts of the former US state of Iowa.  The House of Lords is the upper appointed and hereditary house, 27 strong, consisting of the most senior 9 members of each rank of the peerage (Count, Viscount, Baron).  In the absence of 9 members of a rank, an Erobian citizen is appointed to that rank and to a seat in the House of Lords until the 9 member limit is reached.  The Grand Duke may at any time elevate as many citizens to the peerage as he wishes, however, according to custom there is a limit of 25 of each rank at any one time. 

 

Privileges of the Peerage.

The primary privilege of peers is the right to be tried by the whole body of the peerage as opposed to a jury of citizens.

Members of the House of Lords, are in all cases, except treason, felony, and breach of the peace privileged from arrest during their attendance at Parliament and on their journey to and from Sessions.  These peers are, however, subject to indictment by the Council of Erobia on any charge, and stand for trial by his/her peers at the conclusion of the current parliamentary session. 

It is the right of each peer of the realm, and any of his titled heirs, to demand an audience of the Grand Duke, and to lay before him, with decency and respect, such matters as the peer (or his titled heir) shall judge of importance to the public welfare.

Scandalum magnatum:  defamation of a non-peerage citizen must prove harm to the defamed, for a guilty verdict to be rendered.  Defamation of a peer, or one of his titled heirs, called scandalum magnatum, does not require proof of harm.  The simple false statement made about the peer (or his titled heirs) when proven, constitutes the crime.

 

Erobian Orders of Chivalry

The Order of the Most Noble Theotokos is granted to the spouse of a Prince or Peer of the realm.  There is one grade:  Knight/Dame Companion.  Postnomials are KBN or DBN.  

Insignia:  The ribbon of the order is 3 inches wide, red with gold edging, worn draped over the right shoulder, and crossed at the left hip, with the badge of the order pinned to the crossed ends of the ribbon at the left hip.  The badge is 

The Order of St. Raphael is granted to Erobian citizens who render personal service to the Crown. There is one grade: Knight/Dame Companion.  Postnomials are KSR/DSR.  

Insignia:  The ribbon of the order is 2 inches wide, yellow with black edging, worn around the neck, with the badge of the order pendant.  The badge is 

The Order of St. Stephen is granted to Erobian citizens whose actions bring honor to the name of the Grand Duchy of Erobia.  There are 3 grades:  Knight/Dame Grand Cross, Knight/Dame Commander, and Commander.  Postnomials are GCSS, KCSS/DCSS, and CSS.

Insignia:  The ribbon of the order is Royal Blue with copper edging, 3 inches wide for Grand Cross, worn draped from the right shoulder and crossed at the left hip,  2 inches wide for Knight/Dame, and 1 inch wide for Commander.  The badge of the order is attached at the left hip (as with the Order of the Theotokos) for Grand Cross and hangs from a neck ribbon for Knight and Dame, and from a ribbon pinned to the left chest for Commander.  

The Order of St. Demetrios is granted to non-citizens of the Grand Duchy whose life and actions reflect to an elevated degree any of the Christian virtues.  Rank is Companion and postnomials are CSD.

  Nobility of Erobia The Grand Duke/Duchess is the fount of honor, from him/her all patents of nobility and princely status originate.     Originally, there existed 3 princely titles in the Grand Duchy of Erobia:  the Prince of Viele, styled Eminent Highness, who is the heir apparent to the Grand Duke, the Princes of Iowa, styled Serene Highness, who are the other children of the Grand Duke, in addition to the children of the Duke of Leigh, the heir to the Prince of Viele, the Princes of Moser, styled Highness, who are the children of Princes of Iowa.  On New Years Day, 2024, His Eminence created the dignity of “Prince (general),” also styled Highness,  who is/will be a linear descendent of the niblings of the first Grand Duke, heritable only by the children of the firstborn of each family .  At that time, the princely family names were:  Wilder, Laugle, Gove, and Mosier.  As future princesses (general) marry, more names will be elevated...
