Nobility of Erobia

The Grand Duke/Duchess is the fount of honor, from him/her all patents of nobility and princely status originate.  

 

Originally, there existed 3 princely titles in the Grand Duchy of Erobia:  the Prince of Viele, styled Eminent Highness, who is the heir apparent to the Grand Duke, the Princes of Iowa, styled Serene Highness, who are the other children of the Grand Duke, in addition to the children of the Duke of Leigh, the heir to the Prince of Viele, the Princes of Moser, styled Highness, who are the children of Princes of Iowa. 

On New Years Day, 2024, His Eminence created the dignity of “Prince (general),” also styled Highness,  who is/will be a linear descendent of the niblings of the first Grand Duke, heritable only by the children of the firstborn of each family .  At that time, the princely family names were:  Wilder, Laugle, Gove, and Mosier.  As future princesses (general) marry, more names will be elevated.  No immigrant is permitted to have one of the Princely surnames.  If an immigrant’s surname is a Princely one, he/she must adopt a new surname upon grant of residency in the Grand duchy.

 

The Nobility of Erobia is led by the Duke of Leigh, The Heir of the Duke of Leigh is the Marquess of Haginrich.  These are named the major peerages.  All other peerage titles in the Grand Duchy are termed minor peerages:  Count, Viscount, and Baron.  The first nine in precedence of each rank (Count, Viscount, Baron) make up, along with the bishops and archpriests of the Erobian church, the House of Lords, the upper house of the Erobian Parliament (by convention and Church Law, the Spiritual Lords are non-voting members).  By convention, other than the Princes of Moser, when there are more than 25 of any one peerage title (not including subsidiary titles which are always tied to the primary title) no further appointments are made to that peerage title.

All children of a Prince of Moser are Princes (general);  however, only princes (general) who are themselves firstborn will pass the title to their own children.

The title of a peer who dies without an heir goes into abeyance and is available for award by any future Grand Duke.  The following peerage titles are expected to go into abeyance at some time in the future:  Comital titles Adena, Bayle, Hamill, Newton, Lake, Osborne, Montrose (2), Jaggar, Salem, viscomital title, Melchin, and baronial title Peters. The comital titles are always awarded to grandchildren of the Grand Duke, on the 21st birthday of each new peer.  Each new Count/ess takes his/her place at the bottom of the list of precedence.  If a title goes into abeyance, the titles further down the list of precedence will move up, and the formerly 10th in precedence moves up to 9th in precedence and takes his/her seat in Parliament.

One of the preeminent duties of the Grand Duke is the appointment of peerage ranks.  If at any time the number of any one rank of the minor peerages falls to fewer than 9, the Grand Duke will immediately appoint a member of the populace to that rank.  At no time will the number of viscounts or barons exceed 25 members, not including a child of a Prince of Moser.  If a situation arises that there are fewer than 25 Counts, the Grand Duke may appoint one of his grandchildren who are not of age to a comital title;  however that Count will fall to the bottom of the parliamentary precedence list.
